EAGLE WATCHING: 
Along the Mississippi River at Lock and Dam 13 hundreds of eagles arrive each winter to fish.  It is truly one of the most spectacular sites in all of the Midwest.  Black bodies with white heads swooping down into a small open area of the ice – talons reach out and snatch up a fish almost faster than the eye can capture.  Sometimes the fish are bigger than these majestic birds and they scramble around on the ice fighting for their dinner.

• U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Lock and Dam 13 –Just south of Thomson off IL Hwy. 84 – large viewing area with restrooms.
• Savanna-Sabula Backwaters—The Mississippi River backwaters between Savanna, IL, and Sabula, IA, are excellent spots to view eagles from your car or a quiet spot.
• Mississippi Palisades State Park—The high bluffs of Miss. Palisades State Park, located one mile north of Savanna, IL, offer a great opportunity to view eagles soaring in the air on warmer winter days or sitting in island trees on colder days.
• Upper Mississippi River national Wildlife & Fish Refuge/Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center – exhibits and programs on wetland conservation and area animals.
  
  

WINTER ACTIVITIES:
Carroll County is a wonder spot for outdoor winter recreation from slow paced ice fishing to fast paced snowmobiling and everything in between.

• Ice Fishing – Many fisherman can be seen along the Mississippi River as soon as the river is frozen. 
• Cross Country Skiing – Mississippi Palisades State Park – 2500 acres.  Located North of Savanna on Hwy 84.
